Description:

After 2 years of researching what foods are BAD and which foods are BEST for me, I've come to the conclusion that I should strive for all organic, all fresh.  HOWEVER, on our budget, and with our schedule, that isn't always possible.  So we've come to categorize which foods are BEST, Better, or BAD.  When preparing food for my family, I try to remind myself that foods may be acceptable, but not always beneficial.  Join me on mission trying to improvise menus from BAD to BETTER.

We are trying to make healthy eating a lifestyle, not just a trend, for the everyday famililes who need convenience and budget friendly meals. I never promise perfection...remember, this group is about REAL people. Can't wait to hear your ideas!

I recommend the local Farmer's Markets. The prices there are usually quite reasonable, and most of the produce is grown organically, sustainably, or without pesticides, chemicals, etc. (just without the organic certification). I think buying locally is very important. I often visit the one at New Harvest Park http://www.knoxcounty.org/farmersmarket/index.php

There's several other markets in the area that I'm not familiar with.

From the Dirty Dozen list, I've seen strawberries, kale, lettuce, bell peppers, and carrots there, and I just started going at the end of last season.

Also, I LOVE that Dirty Dozen guide! Thanks so much for sharing it!

I recently read a great book titled "To Buy or Not to Buy Organic" by Cindy Burke. It's a great way to determine what products you should really spend the money for organics and which wouldn't be quite as bad if you bought conventional.

Also, you can get more information here: http://www.foodnews.org/

And it even has a printable grocery card of the dirty dozen (foods with the most pesticides) to avoid!
